Southern Star Ranch Title

Carleigh is a very active chocolate labrador retriever.  She is looking for a home with an active person that will play ball with her, take her for walks, and possibly even go hiking.

Carleigh loves human interaction and would love to have her very own human.  She is spayed, heartworm-negative and current on all of her vaccinations.

Carleigh is approximately 4 1/2 years old and takes thyroid medication daily and will need to continue that.

At Southern Star Ranch, we know all too well the affects of the overpopulation of dogs and cats in our society.  With the exception of a few, all of the dogs that we use in our detector training programs come from shelters, most of which are 'kill shelters'.  This typically means that within a few short days (and sometimes hours) these dogs would have been euthanized.

On some occasions, we have spent an entire weekend going through as many as 30 shelters, searching for, and testing dogs that could be taken into our detector training program.  Out of every 300-400 dogs tested, we might find one for our program. It is heart-wrenching to know that most of the other hundreds of dogs have a short time remaining.  The vast majority of these are perfectly wonderful, adoptable dogs.  They just need to be matched with the right human and the right situation.

A study has shown that only 4 out of every 50 dogs will find homes that last a lifetime.  This is only one of many reasons why we promote neutering and spaying of all pets.

Occasionally, one of our detector trainees 'flunks' out of the program.  It doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with the dog, but it just does not have enough drive for that type of work.  When this happens, we do not return dogs to 'kill shelters'.  We adopt them out to an appropriate home that will be suitable for their personality.

Our adoption fee is $100.00.  Please contact us  if you are interested in meeting one of our adoptable pets.

Southern Star Ranch works closely with Austin German Shepherd Rescue.  We frequently house several rescues until a foster home or adopter is found.  Visit their website for information on these dogs.
